Understanding Umbrella

What is a PAYE umbrella company and how does it work?

A PAYE umbrella company sits between you, the contractor, and the recruitment agency or client you work for. We act as your employer of record for payroll purposes — meaning you have a real employment contract with us, and we manage everything involved in paying you correctly and compliantly.

When you complete an assignment, your agency or client invoices are sent to us. We collect the payment, calculate the correct tax and National Insurance deductions under PAYE, and pay your net wages directly to your bank account, along with a clear payslip showing every element of your pay.

This arrangement is widely used by contractors who work inside IR35, temporary workers placed through recruitment agencies, and anyone who wants the simplicity of being employed without being tied to a single employer.

The payment flow

1
Agency pays Abevelit
Your agency sends the agreed assignment rate to us on your behalf.
2
We deduct tax & NI
PAYE tax and National Insurance are calculated and set aside for HMRC.
3
We pay you
Your net wages are transferred to your bank, same day.
4
You receive a payslip
A full itemised breakdown of every deduction is sent to you.
IR35 & Compliance

Umbrella and IR35: everything you need to know

IR35 is HMRC legislation designed to ensure that contractors who work in a manner similar to employees pay broadly the same tax as employees. If a contract is deemed to be "inside IR35," the worker is treated as an employee for tax purposes.

Using an Abevelit PAYE umbrella contract removes all IR35 risk entirely. Because you are genuinely employed by us under a contract of employment, you are already paying the correct level of tax and National Insurance through PAYE. There is no ambiguity about your status — you are an employee.

This means no unexpected tax bills, no risk of investigation, and no need to worry about how your contract is written with the end client. For most temporary workers and agency contractors, our umbrella service is the simplest and most secure solution available.

No IR35 risk whatsoever

You're a genuine employee of Abevelit Payroll. IR35 simply doesn't apply.

No self-assessment complications

Tax and NI are deducted at source every pay period. You won't need to file a self-assessment return solely for your umbrella income.

Easier access to mortgages & credit

Continuous employment is viewed more favourably by lenders than self-employment or gaps in your tax history.

Employment Rights

Your rights as an Abevelit umbrella employee

Unlike some payroll arrangements, our umbrella employment gives you all the statutory rights and protections of a permanent employee.

28 days paid holiday

You accrue paid holiday entitlement from day one. Holiday pay is calculated on your average earnings and paid either in advance or on request.

Statutory sick pay

If you're unable to work due to illness, you're entitled to statutory sick pay (SSP) from day four of your absence, just like any other employee.

Maternity & paternity pay

Qualifying umbrella employees are entitled to statutory maternity pay (SMP) and statutory paternity pay (SPP) in line with current HMRC rates.

Workplace pension

We automatically enrol you into a workplace pension scheme, with employer contributions made on your behalf in line with current legislation.

Insurance cover included

All Abevelit umbrella employees are covered by employer's liability, professional indemnity and public liability insurance at no additional cost.

Employee benefits platform

Access exclusive discounts on retail, travel, health, gym memberships, and more through our employee benefits platform.

Understanding Your Pay

What will your take-home pay look like?

One of the most common questions we receive is about take-home pay. It's important to understand the difference between the assignment rate your agency is paid and the net amount that reaches your bank account.

The assignment rate includes employer's National Insurance contributions, the apprenticeship levy, our margin, and holiday pay — all of which are deducted before your gross pay is calculated. Your gross pay is then subject to employee NI and income tax through PAYE in the normal way.

We provide every employee with a full Key Information Document (KID) before they start, showing a clear illustration of their expected take-home pay. There are no surprises.

PAYE Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about PAYE umbrella

How is my tax calculated under umbrella PAYE?
Your tax is calculated in exactly the same way as a permanent employee's tax. We apply your personal tax code, deduct income tax and employee National Insurance at the applicable rates, and remit everything to HMRC on your behalf. You receive a payslip showing every calculation.
Can I claim expenses through an umbrella company?
The ability to claim expenses as an umbrella employee is restricted by HMRC's Supervision, Direction and Control (SDC) rules. If you work under SDC — which most umbrella workers do — you are not able to claim relief on travel and subsistence expenses. We will always confirm your situation before you start.
What happens if I take a break between contracts?
Your employment with Abevelit continues between assignments if you wish. You retain your employee status, insurance cover and access to the benefits platform throughout. Simply let us know when you have a new assignment to process.
Will I need to submit a self-assessment tax return?
Most umbrella employees do not need to file a self-assessment return solely for their umbrella income, as all tax is deducted at source. However, if you have other income sources — such as rental income, investments, or a second job — you may still be required to file.
How do I access my payslips?
All payslips are available through our secure online portal, accessible from any device 24/7. You can view, download and print historical payslips at any time. Payment notifications are also sent by email or text when pay is processed.
What if my agency pays in a different currency?
We process payroll in pounds sterling. If you work for international clients through a UK agency, the agency is responsible for any currency conversion before invoicing us. Please speak to our team if you have a specific international arrangement.
Is there a minimum or maximum contract length?
No — our umbrella service can be used for contracts of any length, from a single day to multi-year engagements. You're only charged for weeks you actually work. There are no minimum term commitments.
What notice do I need to give if I want to leave?
There are no exit fees and no notice requirements on your part. If you decide to move to another payroll provider or stop contracting entirely, simply let us know and we'll process your final payment and provide a P45.
